[Listen] Neal Morgan ׀ “Fathers Day”

Posted November 19, 2011

Neal Morgan is a drummer first and foremost. And a talented one at that. This upcoming January 24, he’ll be releasing his second studio album, In the Yard.

Morgan has been performing with Joanna Newsom since 2006 and Bill Callahan since 2009. He also arranged and performed the drums on Newsom’s Have One On Me. Needless to say, he knows his stuff. So much so that he is self-releasing his sophomore album, with distribution by Drag City.

The first single from this album, “Fathers Day,” is as much about the instrumentals as it is about the story he is telling. The vocals are reminiscent of spoken word, and the harmonies are much like Dirty Projectors’ Bitte Orca. And this avant garde style makes it clear why he is the go-to drummer for such artists as Newsom and Callahan.
